AS Level - Classical Civilisation

UPDATED 20160318 16:16:48

Classical Civilisation embraces the study of the achievements and lifestyle of the Greeks and Romans in the ancient world ? the basis of our own culture today. Various topics are investigated, covering a wide range of themes. These include: the role of women in the ancient world, literature in translation encompassing the origins of Western theatre in Greek tragedy, the development of the epic novel, the role of mass entertainment in the Roman world and Roman engineering as seen in the Colosseum. The department also arranges visits to museums, such as the British Museum, to study Classical artefacts and to the Roman villa at Bignor to look at Roman design, building methods and decoration. Whenever possible students attend performances of the Greek tragedies that form part of the syllabus. Very successful trips to Italy have been organised, usually biannually, visiting Rome and Pompeii.
