Biology is the study of life. At RPHS Sixth Form, students study the many concepts contained within this definition, including anatomy, physiology, botany, microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology. We aim to enable students to develop an empathy with the environment we live in and to recognise the value of Biology in society. The course enables students to develop skills in experimental techniques including design, observation, data handling and evaluating skills. The practical element of the course involves a range of different biological techniques such as microscopy, biochemical testing, chromatography and other laboratory skills. Practical elements are incorporated into the course at all available opportunities. At A2 Level, students also study genetics, ecology, neuroscience and plant biology. Throughout the course students are encouraged to ‘learn through doing’ rather than just listening to teacher explanations and considerable use is made of ICT. AS Level 1 Biological molecules 2 Cells 3 Organisms exchange substances with their environment 4 Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms A Level 5 Energy transfers in and between organisms 6 Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments 7 Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems 8 The control of gene expression
