Portrait Drawing and Painting

UPDATED 20160317 16:19:43

Is this the right course for me? Beginners and more experienced artists alike are welcome on this course. What will I learn? The focus of this course is to build technique and develop a range of skills while exploring the art of drawing and painting portraits. Setting up a portrait requires some knowledge of anatomy in order to understand how to confidently place facial features. Initially you will make drawings and paintings which help to understand the anatomy, working with construction lines to suggest proportion and seeking a basic overview. These initial drawings / paintings will help you to recognise ways in which you can develop an analytical approach to create more personalised and developed works. Analytical and expressive drawing and painting exercises will culminate in more developed and finished portraits. How will I learn? Through observation, memory and practical exercises students will be encouraged to experiment with materials and work towards developing an individual approach. Preparatory sketchbook work, imagination and memory will support your study. One-to-one tuition as well as demonstrations will teach you about different techniques and drawing approaches. Will I gain a qualification? You will not gain a formal qualification but you may request a Certificate of Attendance and Achievement from your tutor, to be given out at the end of the course. What can I do next? You may wish to join a continuation course where you will learn other skills and techniques, ensuring you develop painting skills with confidence. What do I need to bring to the classes? Please bring any sketchpads and art materials you already have so the tutor can assess individual needs. Can I talk to someone about my course before I start it? It is usually possible to put you directly in touch with the tutor if a member of the Community Learning MK staff cannot answer your query.
