What is Philosophy A Level? Philosophy A Level is an essay based subject: there are no one-word or multiple-choice questions, no graphs or illustrations to draw, and no comprehension questions. For each paper in the AS exams students answer on two topics, and for each topic students answer one short question and one essay question. Exam board: AQA Section A: Epistemology • Direct realism • Indirect realism • The definition of knowledge • Where do ideas and concepts about knowledge come from? • Knowledge empiricism Section B: Philosophy of Religion • Concepts of God (paradox of the stone and the Euthyphro dilemma). • The Ontological argument • The Teleological argument • The Cosmological argument • The problem of evil • Religious language These two form the two modules for the AS award. The next two modules form the A2 award. Section A: Ethics • Utilitarianism • Kantian deontological ethics • Aristotle's virtue ethics • Ethical language: What is the status of ethical language? Section B: Philosophy of Mind • Dualism (the mind is distinct from the physical). • Logical/analytical behaviourism • Mind-brain type identity theory • Eliminative materialism
