Context: This is an opportunity to study a new subject, which you will not have taken at GCSE. You will learn to: Develop an understanding of how British democracy works and the challenges it faces. Improve your awareness of current affairs and complex issues which dominate the news, and to apply critical thinking in all areas of the course. Develop critical thinking, analysis and communication skills. These skills are essential to achieve A Levels, to succeed in higher education and are valued in the workplace. Government and Politics is a good choice for students who wish to study social sciences or humanities courses in higher education. It is popular with students who would like go on to a career in government, the civil service, law or journalism. What you will study: The specification is divided into 4 units, each covering 4 topics. Unit 1 People and Politics: Democracy and Participation, Elections, Pressure Groups, Political Parties. This AS unit examines power, democracy and the role and rights of citizens in the UK. Students also study political parties, pressure groups, and examine how democratic elections are in the UK. Unit 2 Governing the UK: UK Constitution, Parliament, PM and Cabinet, Judiciary. This AS unit covers the main parts of government and examines how effective they are. Students will study the nature of the UK constitution, along with the powers of Parliament, the Prime Minister and Judges. Unit 3 UK Political Issues (A2): Economic Policy; Social Welfare, Health and Education; Law, Order and Criminal Justice; Environmental Policy. Students study key themes in UK political issues, examining the similarities and differences between recent governments' policies and how the parties compare today. Unit 4 EU Political Issues (A2): Impact of the EU on the UK; EU Integration; EU Institutions and their Relationships; Domestic Policy Issues. Students examine different aspects of EU integration and their impact on the UK.
