Context This course will enable candidates to develop literary analysis and creative skills. A love of reading is essential as students must read widely throughout the two year course. A-level English Literature is a highly regarded degree across the world of Industry. It is well-respected and will open several doors for you in non-English careers as well as the more traditional routes of Publishing, Media, Journalism and Teaching. What you will study Paper 1 Literary Genres (40% of A Level) You will study: Aspects of Tragedy, which will include four texts: Texts are likely to include: William Shakespeare - Othello; A Miller - Death of a Salesman; Keats -Poetry; F. Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby. Paper 2: Texts and Genres (40% of A Level) - Elements of Political and Social Protest Writing You will study three texts; one post-2000 prose text, one poetry and one further text; one of which must be written pre- 1900. Texts could include: M Attwood - The Handmaid's Tale; W Blake - Songs of Innocence and Experience; K Hosseini - The Kite Runner. Non-exam Assessment: Theory and Independence (20% of A level) Study of two texts: one poetry and one prose text, informed by the study of a Critical Anthology. Two essays of 1250 - 1500 words, each responding to the Critical Anthology. One essay can be re-creative. The re-creative piece will be accompanied by a commentary. How You Will Be Assessed This qualification is linear, meaning that students will sit all the AS exams at the end of their AS course and all the Alevel exams at the end of their A-level course.
