What topics will you study? The course is divided into three main strands which will be taught across the two years. Physical Chemistry – This is the study of how chemicals, materials and matter behave in the world. This is applied through looking at chemical bonding in materials, stoichiometry and equilibrium. Organic Chemistry – This is the study of carbon chemistry starting off in year 12 with straight chain carbon molecules and in year 13 progressing on to aromatic chemistry. This is applied within the context of developing medicines, biological macromolecules and new plastics. Inorganic Chemistry – This is the study of specific groups in the periodic table and the periodicity. Looking at patterns in reactivity and how non carbon chemicals behave in reactions. In addition to the practicals which occur within the course of teaching a number of practicals are required to be completed which can be examined. What skills do you need to be successful? To be successful in chemistry you need to have a wide range of skills, developing an analytical thought and discussion skills to formulate evidence based answers. Interpretative and investigative skills are developed within the practical elements of the course. Students also have to work collaboratively as scientists often building on the work of others to develop new scientific ideas. What career or university courses does this course lead to? Chemistry leads to a wide variety of careers from the scientific, studying degrees in Chemistry, biological and physical sciences. Chemistry is also a subject required for entry to medicine and pharmacology. In addition to this chemistry is a facilitating subject providing students with increased preference onto a wide range of other courses such as finance, law and environmental management.
