This very popular course is designed to enable students to understand and appreciate the impact that science has on our everyday lives. There is a high level of practical work involved so the students become very skilful in carrying out practical techniques and safely following standard procedures. Students have the opportunity to research and visit a variety of local organisations where science is used in the workplace. Currently the academy has made links with Northumbrian Water, Cameron's Brewery and Parker-Hannafin engineering. Students have the opportunity to see science first hand in the work place and experience the variety of career opportunities that a science qualification could lead to. The students carry out research on energy use and the generation of electricity. This gives them a greater insight into the issues associated with carbon emissions and global warming which are of great concern to everyone. The students will also learn how to synthesise Aspirin, carry out colorimetry and use titrations to analyse food label claims. This course will prepare students for a range of courses including a degree in Applied Science. A level Applied Science can lead to a variety of careers including: Teaching, laboratory technician, forensic science, dental technician, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, environmental work and the health and beauty industries
