Mathematics is a creative discipline. From measuring the dimensions of a Pyramid in Ancient Egypt, to theoretically calculating the correct angle for optimising the flight of a projectile, mathematics is involved. Mathematics also includes problems to be solved for their own sake: Pentominoes, Towers of Hanoi, Cryptogram, these can all be modelled and solved mathematically. This is a saying that applies the more one studies the topic. With deeper and deeper study into the topic, it will unfold with the mind , a glance at a shadow, a plant, anything will suddenly present itself to you as a mathematical expression. The classic example is the series of numbers: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8… a remarkable pattern of numbers that can be modelled onto most naturally occurring things. Students who attain a good grounding in A-Level Maths will have disciplined their thinking to be rational, problem solving and practical. However, they will also be able to connect up many different fields of life by understanding their foundation in Mathematics - the different options of the course allow diversions into mechanics (useful for physics or practical subjects) or statistics (useful for any course requiring an understanding of data and analysis).
