Studying a modern foreign language is not just about speaking the language. A language student is exposed to a different society with unique cultural aspects and customs. Studying a language gives an individual the confidence to put forward a point of view in a structured and animated way and develops communication, interpersonal, analytic and interpretative skills. Two years of language study can enhance a curriculum vitae and will catch the eye of anyone reading a job or university application. Studying a language could therefore lead to a top job or a place on a university course. SKILLS NEEDED In order to succeed at both AS and A Level a student will need to demonstrate considerable linguistic ability at GCSE level, be hard working and committed. Other requirements are a sound understanding of the basic grammar taught for GCSE, the ability and the will to communicate in both the written and the spoken language, the ability to learn a wide range of vocabulary, and a natural curiosity about the language and the cultures of other people. Ideally an AS student will have taken all higher tier papers at GCSE.
