Business will: • enable candidates to focus on the dynamic nature of the contemporary business world • provide opportunities for research into topical business issues • offer opportunities for the development and application of a full range of academic skills • explore real business situations • help in the practical application of business concepts • aid understanding of the role of the entrepreneur and business in society. In addition the business course helps students develop a number of skills: • how to assemble data and assess it • how to investigate facts and use deduction • how to put over your point of view fluently • how to work as a team to achieve results Students who take business often also study, computing, modern languages, or maths. But students committed to the arts or sciences should also consider taking business in this cost-centred world. SUBJECT CONTENT OF AS & A LEVEL Students of this course should study business in a variety of contexts (eg large/small, UK focused/global, service / manufacturing) and consider. • the importance of the context of business in relation to decision making • the interrelated nature of business activities and how they affect competitiveness • the competitive environment and the markets in which businesses operate • the influences on functional decisions and plans including ethical and environmental issues • the factors that might determine whether a decision is successful eg the quality of data and the degree of uncertainty • how technology is changing the way decisions are made and how businesses operate and compete • the impact on stakeholders of functional decisions and their response to such decisions • use of non-quantitative and quantitative data in decision making (including the interpretation of index numbers and calculations such as ratios and percentages).

AS AS there are two papers, both 1 hour 30 minutes and each worth 50% of the AS level qualification. At A level there are 3 papers, each 2 hours and worth 33.3% of the A level qualification.
