This combined course is suitable for students who enjoy the study of both Language and Literature and who are keen to explore more about how the English language works and how it can be used to shape and create meaning. If you are more interested in one or the other of these, you might want to consider the single subject courses. This course is ideal if you equally enjoy analysing texts and writing your own, both of which can help you to develop your writing style further. Be prepared to experiment with different types of writing and to learn from the writers we study! Independent reading and research is a key aspect of the course and lessons will often centre on discussions of material you will have prepared in advance. You will develop a detailed knowledge of English grammar and linguistic and literary terms and will be encouraged to become confident at using these in discussions and in your analytical writing. We like to encourage lively debates! For the creative writing part of the course, we will often take a workshop approach: you need to be willing to show your drafts to others in the group and be open to feedback other readers give you to help you improve. 100% exam assessment for AS: two exams at the end of the first year requiring analysis of an unseen non-fiction extract and previously studied extract, creative writing task based on a non-fiction text studied in class and two essays on two texts (e.g. Tess of the D?Urbervilles and Much Ado About Nothing).
