The study of Mathematics at Advanced Level is run on a modular system. Every group of three modules passed forms a qualification. Three modules together form an AS Level in Mathematics and six modules achieve an A Level. Further bundles of three modules go towards Further Mathematics AS or A Levels. All examinations take place in June. There are three strands that all AS/A Level students will study: Core (Pure Mathematics), Statistics and Decision 1. Core Mathematics includes trigonometric functions, coordinate geometry and calculus. Statistics looks at how data can be collected and analysed. Decision introduces the idea of algorithms and discrete maths. The modules studied during year 12 are Core 1, Core 2 and Statistics 1 and during year 13 are Core 3, Core 4 and Mechanics 1. A modern scientific calculator is essential for use throughout the course. You will receive a textbook for each module which you return upon completion of the course. Homework is set weekly and past exam questions are completed during lessons after a chapter has been taught from each module. These two methods of assessment are key ways of tracking your attainment and progress on this course.
