The course, as detailed, develops musicianship in a challenging and enjoyable way with wide choice to cater for personal preference and standard. Units in AS • Unit 1 - Performing A choice of Solo and Ensemble performance, in any style, submitted as a 5 minute performance. (The 5 minutes can be made up of more than one piece). • Unit 2 - Composing You submit one piece of work from a choice of options and write a CD sleeve note to describe your piece together with pieces which influenced you. • Unit 3 - Developing Musical Understanding Two topic areas are studied and you are required to show understanding of style and the context and time in which the music was written. Units in A2 • Unit 4 - Performing Students further develop their performance skills and offer a 12-15 minute recital for assessment. • Unit 5 - Composing Two 3 minute composition in response to a brief or an option to do a technical study showing understanding of harmony. • Unit 6 - Further Musical Understanding Students are required to show an in-depth understanding of continuity and change in instrumental music of various periods and styles, and also to study “context” which usually includes some film music and world music.
