Economics is available as a one-year (AS) course or two-year (A Level) course. All students will be entered for the AS exams at the end of Year 12. Success at AS Level will enable progression on to A Level. As a new, linear A Level, however, it is only the exams that are taken at the end of the 2-year course that contribute towards the A Level grade. If students decide not to continue to A Level, they leave their first year of studies with the AS Level qualification. Unit 1: Markets and Market Failure: why economic choices have to be made; the market model; how markets can be efficient and also how they can fail. Unit 2: The National Economy: the use of economic models to develop a critical understanding of macro-economic issues; understanding and evaluating the different policy options used by governments to manage the economy. These units are common to the AS and A Level courses. Students of the A Level Economics course will be expected to study additional areas within each component in the second year of the course. Unit 3: Economic Principles and Issues (A Level Economics course only) : applying the theory learnt in units 1 and 2 in 'real world' contexts.
