Mathematics is about problem solving and communicating information. The majority of everyday scenarios can be modelled mathematically enabling us to understand situations and find solutions. Many future predictions about climate and population change have roots in mathematics. Students study three modules for AS Level, and a further three modules for A2, combining Pure and Applied Maths, which are each assessed through written examination papers. One of the modules includes a piece of coursework which is completed in the Spring Term of year 13. Each module has equal weighting towards the summary qualification. Further Mathematics enables you to study mathematics at a greater depth and breadth. You will study a range of topics that complement those in A Level Mathematics, including more on new number systems, calculus, numerical methods and complex numbers. In Statistics, you will further your knowledge of distributions, sampling techniques and hypothesis testing, and measures of correlation. In Mechanics, you will learn to model different situations, use vectors and deal with forces and motion. If you enjoy Mathematics, and found GCSE Maths fairly straight forward, then Further Mathematics could be for you.
