Mathematics is about problem solving and communicating information. The majority of everyday scenarios can be modelled mathematically enabling us to understand situations and find solutions. Many future predictions about climate and population change have roots in mathematics. AS and A level Mathematics builds on GCSE Mathematics, with topics such as trigonometry, coordinate geometry and algebra. We will also look at developments of the number system and the application of mathematics in problem solving. Pure maths forms the foundations of all mathematics and includes the study of calculus, sequences, functions and numerical solutions. It also includes some applications of mathematics. In Statistics, you will develop further methods to represent data, deal with probability, look at permutations and combinations, and how to test hypotheses. Decision mathemacs enables you to use mathemacal approaches, as used in industry, to develop solutions to problems. Topics such as systems, networks and algorithms will be studied. Students study three modules for AS level, and a further three modules for A2, combining Pure and Applied Maths, which are each assessed through wrien examination papers. Core 3 includes a piece of coursework which is completed in the Autumn Term of Year 13. Each module has equal weighting towards the summary qualification.
