Modern Languages - French

UPDATED 20161118 11:08:03

Studying a language gives learners the opportunity to develop and deepen their awareness and understanding of the language as well as the cultural knowledge of the countries and communities where the language is spoken. At Bishop Ramsey we offer A levels in both French and Spanish. The French course focuses on how French-speaking society has been shaped, socially and culturally, and how it continues to change. Students study aspects of the social context together with aspects of the artistic life of French-speaking countries. Students explore issues of French society as well as film and literature through the use of authentic texts and materials. The approach is very much an integrated one which is designed to foster a range of transferable skills – communication, critical thinking and creativity which are valuable to the individual and society as a whole. There is an A-level course which is linear and spans two years. There is also the possibility of an AS-level in French which is also linear and which spans just one year. This is a stand alone qualification and does not count towards the A-level qualification. However, the course is structured in such a way that it is relevant to both disciplines whether students decide to pursue the AS or the A-level qualification. We offer students the opportunity to go to France to complete work experience and also we do French cinema trips throughout. We encourage students to read extensively and support them in pursuing their own interests in French.
