Music

UPDATED 20160310 15:40:36

Students will listen to music from a range of genres (baroque, classical and romantic, pop music, music for media, music for theatre, jazz, contemporary music and traditional music) and answer short, focused questions about the pieces. They will study two areas in depth and answer essay-style questions about them. Students will compose two pieces of music of their own, in any style, one in response to a brief set by AQA. They can use Music Creator, Sibelius or Audacity software on a PC (or other software or hardware), or perform their pieces live. A composing log of both pieces will be kept and student will evaluate one of their compositions in an essay. Students will perform 10-12 minutes (in total), in any style, as a soloist and as a member of a group or ensemble and/or by using music technology using MIDI and audio tracks, close-mic, DI and sequencing techniques. Working independently, creating and developing original ideas, presenting a finished product, working to deadlines, working as part of a team to solve problems and create an end product are all skills that students will develop during the course. Also responding articulately to something they’ve heard, analysing material and presenting findings in written form.
