Geography

Are you interested in the world around you? And in how nature shapes the landscape and the different impact of humans on natural systems? Are you aware of the key issues facing society? Global warming, energy shortages, the population explosion, conflicts between countries, changing patterns of trade and employment to name but a few. At A Level there is time to explore such issues in detail. You will simultaneously develop essential skills that will serve you well in applying for any university course and in later employment. Geography results at Wyedean have been some of the very best in the country, last year over 74% of students got A*-B. Come and share in our success. There is an emphasis on learning outside of the classroom. A field trip to the Brecon Beacons or coast takes place in Year 12 and there are several other trips planned during the course, including an optional trip to Iceland. Regular use is made of the school's ICT facilities and there are good text books and library resources for independent enquiry. The exact content of your course will depend on Government changes that are not yet finalised. However, it is likely to involve the study of coastal landscapes; changing cities, the inequalities that develop and approaches to tackling them; global connections between countries (trade/migration) as well as issues relating to Power and Borders that can develop. We are very much looking forward to exploring some of the Geographical Debates that exist eg in relation to climate change, oceans, food, disease and tectonic hazards.
