Ethics Religious Studies looks at “ultimate questions” such as the nature of existence. This is done by a philosophical approach, developing skills in assessing the validity and strengths of arguments and approaches. These skills are also applied to understanding a world religion, its history and its beliefs. Debate and discussion are an important element of the course. In this course you will study how both religious and non-religious people make moral decisions including absolute and relative approaches. You will explore ethical theories such as Natural Law, Situation Ethics, Kantian Ethics and Utilitarianism. You will also enjoy learning about the ethics of a religion you choose, its main ethical principles, the ways in which religion and morality may be linked. You will explore the concepts of the “Sanctity of Life”, “Quality of Life” and “Just War”. These theories and principles are applied in this course to medical ethics e.g. abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering, as well as issues of war and peace. Anyone with a questioning mind and an interest in the world around them would enjoy this course. The study of Ethics will widen your horizons and enable you to ask and analyse the questions and answers you never even thought of. Description of the subject - Islam The Islam unit is an exciting and interesting course. Not a week goes by when something to do with Islam is not mentioned on the news, e.g. the cartoons insulting the prophet, terrorists causing atrocities in the name of Islam, the rights of women, Shariah Law etc. The great thing about this course is that students will learn exactly what Islam is about, its true beliefs and practices. Religious Studies is held in high esteem by higher education institutions. This course is an excellent foundation for degree courses in Law, Medicine, Journalism, Psychology, Theology and Philosophy. Being able to link, debate, analyse and develop your own ideas are regarded as very useful skills.
