UPDATED 20160307 14:48:09

An apprenticeship framework is made up of a number of qualifications aimed at equipping you with the skills which form the basis of a career in the industry. You must achieve all elements to be awarded your apprenticeship. These include a mainly theoretical qualification known as the technical certificate, a mainly practical work-based qualification, called an NVQ, and functional skills qualifications in the core subjects of English, and maths. The technical certificate which you will study in College combines workshop-based training with the related theory. The practical work includes learning to make repairs and to maintain property using skills in brickwork, carpentry, painting and decorating, plumbing and plastering. The theory lessons are important in developing your knowledge and understanding of the technical areas of your work. To achieve the NVQ, you will show your practical skills in the workplace by carrying out related tasks. Your on-site assessor will visit you to assess your progress. If you do not already have GSCE English and maths at grade C or above you will have to take Functional Skills qualifications at level 1 which are a requirement of all apprenticeship programmes.
