UPDATED 20160307 14:29:18

This is a one year course which is both exciting and challenging. The course combines a mixture of child development and health and social care, as well as units to help you develop essential employability and personal development skills which aim to prepare you to progress to a full Level 3 course. The course is suitable for students progressing from a Level 2 course who need a programme of study to prepare them for a Level 3 course. It is also suitable for school leavers, who have an interest in both child development and health and social care. The course enables you to develop knowledge and skills in three areas; child development, health and social care and employability and further learning. The units include; play and child development, supporting children's learning through sensory activities, meeting the physical needs of children, health promotion in care settings, providing personal care to support individuals to eat and drink, the role of care workers in caring for persons with dementia, work experience, communication skills for group and teamwork and improving own learning and performance. These are a combination of Level 2 and 3 units. You will also undertake a work placement in a child care or health and social care setting, at the end of the course, to be able to apply what you have learnt to practical experiences. All students aged 16-19 are required to study Functional Skills English and Maths qualifications or GCSE Mathematics and English if not already awarded a grade A*-C in these subjects. If you have a grade D at GCSE you will study maths and/or English GCSE. Students with a grade lower than D will work towards GCSE through the study of Maths & English Functional Skills. Students aged 19+ are strongly encouraged to take relevant maths and English qualifications to support progression into further or higher education, training or employment.
