Trade Union Education: Health and Safety Representatives Stage 1

Areas covered include: The safety rep's role; What rights do safety reps have? The Health and Safety at Work Act and other essential regulations; Safety policies and procedures; Organising members on health and safety issues; How to carry out a workplace safety inspection; Investigating accidents; Working with your employer to improve safety; Understanding and improving risk assessment; Safety Committees; Negotiating improvements in health and safety at work.

Course information

Name: Trade Union Education: Health and Safety Representatives Stage 1 Qualification title: Certificate for Trade Union Health and Safety Representatives (QCF) Qualification type: Assessment Reps attend on a day-release basis, one day per week, for 12 weeks. The course is delivered by a professional TUC tutor who is an experienced trade unionist. The course is not like school or 'traditional' learning: instead you work in small groups with fellow reps to tackle health and safety problems that your members might face in an active and co-operative manner. The student makes a portfolio of work based on notes from activities completed during the course with help and guidance from the tutor. Assessment is based on the portfolio produced.
