What is the course about? This course is a compulsory part of the curriculum for all Sixth Form students. It is designed to provide pupils with the skills they require to make a success of their subsequent studies at university, develop the ability to undertake independent and self-directed learning and to think critically and creatively. The programme of study supports the development of well-informed, independent minded individuals. What will I study for AS Level? Unit 1 Students will be given the tools to carry out critical analysis of material. They will be assessed on their ability to: Identify and evaluate arguments; Assess the validity of conclusions and the credibility of sources; Identify and evaluate different perspectives. Unit 2 Students write an essay of between 1,750 and 2,000 words on a global issue of their choice from the topics studied during the course. Unit 3 Candidates produce a 15 minute presentation based on pre-released source material. The stimulus material consists of a range of sources on at least one global issue. Examples of Global issues that may be covered in the course include: Endangered cultures Standard of living/quality of life Ethical foreign policies The economic role of women Medical ethics The religious/secular divide Impact of the internet Urbanisation and the countryside How is the course assessed? Unit 1 Written exam paper - 1hr 30minutes Unit 2 Course essay of up to 2000 words Unit 3 Presentation of 15 minutes What will I study for A2 level? A2 requires the student to produce an Independent Research Report (IRR). It gives the student the opportunity to: - Dig deeper in a chosen specialism; - Study a non-school subject, perhaps one that the candidate plans to read at university; - Apply the skills learnt at AS level; - Develop their independent learning, research and essay writing skills that will be essential when studying at university.
