Students will need 5 A* - C grades at GCSE to include subjects with a strong emphasis on argument / analysis and research Any History students will need Grade B at GCSE. Topics covered AS modules – People and Politics : 4 units Political parties : Students learn the differences between left and right wing parties as well as evaluating their own political affiliation – we compare the different parties available, their history and policies and the extent of their consensus Voting : students evaluate the pros and cons of the current first past the posts system and judge whether the alternatives available would give a fairer outcome as well as the parties attitudes on this and the progress of voting reform thus far Democracy : Students study democracy and how the British system allows them to be represented through, parties, pressure groups and voting mechanisms – we evaluate how democratic Britain is and how it compares to other countries Pressure groups : we examine the different pressure groups in Britain and why some are successful at influencing the government. We evaluate the range of tactics deployed by groups and asses the dangers of radical methods and propaganda campaigns. The course will empower students to take a more active role in politics by enhancing their understanding not only of how the political system works but also how to become involved in the political process. Students will learn to question and analyse current political issues and formulate and structure arguments and hypotheses.
