A2 Level English Language

UPDATED 20160229 09:53:11

Why study A2 English Language? This course addresses vital issues about language in society: Why do you speak the way you do and what does that reveal about you? How and why does language change and what do people think about these changes? What's on the course? Over the summer you will have made a decision regarding the data for your language investigation, perhaps you will be looking at the language of political debate or how people interact in a reality TV show, so that we can immediately begin work on this challenging coursework piece. You will also begin to prepare for your exam by looking closely at all aspects of language variation and change in particular studying accents and dialects and the development of language from 1600 onwards. You will then move onto the language discourses element of the exam where you will study a range of popular texts discussing language issues. Here you will need to be able to analyse and evaluate writer's ideas and style. This will then lead you onto your second coursework task, the language intervention, where you will write about a language debate in a particular form for a non-specialist audience, for example you may write an article for a women's magazine on whether men and women really do use language differently in conversation.
