Media Studies is a dynamic, growing subject, increasingly popular and relevant in modern society. If you are interested in Media and wish to explore how the media operates, this course will provide a good framework.You will learn to analyse critically the way in which the world is presented to the audiences on television, in newspapers, on radio and in other media. The course also offers the opportunity to acquire some skills in practical video, print and web design.To help student learners we organise trips to the BBC, BBFC and the British Music Experience. Also in the past we have organised study trips to Prague and Budapest.In the first and second years the course is 50% theory and 50% practical. The course involves a critical analytical approach to understanding the production and consumption of media texts. You will learn about the importance of media language, narrative, genre, audiences, institutions, ideology and representation. Name: AS/A Level Media Studies Qualification title: GCE AS Level in Media Studies Qualification type: Assessment You will attend lectures, write essays, complete group and individual tasks, give presentations, take part in debates about issues in the media. You will study a variety of texts from a broad range of media including film, television, radio and newspaper using a number of sophisticated critical theories. You will complete one practical project to a set brief on the AS course in Video Production and one critical investigation linked to a practical production in the second year - the practical element will be based on print or website design. Modules one and four are assessed through examination and make up 50% of your final mark. Modules two and three are the coursework component and make up the remaining 50% of your final mark.
