Year 12 You will study four different areas of Psychology. Social Psychology such as obedience and prejudice, Cognitive Psychology such as memory, Biological Psychology such as aggression and Learning Theories such as conditioning and social learning theory. Included in each of the topics will also be a research method; these will be experiments, self-reports, correlations and observations. You will also be required to answer a key question where you discuss a contemporary issue from today’s society using your knowledge from the topics. Year 13 As well as studying the foundations of Psychology from the first year you will also be required to learn about applications of Psychology. The topics you will learn about are clinical psychology such as diagnosis, schizophrenia and OCD and criminological psychology such as explanations, treatments and jury decisions. As in year 12 there will be research methods questions; some regarding what you learnt in year 12 and some new ones such as case studies. You will also be required to answer a key question where you discuss a contemporary issue from today’s society using your knowledge from the topics plus, questions regarding issues and debates in psychology like ethics, reductionism and reliability. A third paper is about synoptic issues where you will be comparing classic and contemporary studies and answering questions based on previously unseen materials. As well as psychology there is a strong mathematical element. Maths skills will be a minimum of 10% of the qualification. You will learn how to conduct statistical tests, read results and analyse them in detail by applying them to different psychological contexts.
