Applied Science (BTEC L3)

UPDATED 20160704 10:45:12

Applied Science is an exciting and inspiring subject best suited to those who are passionate about the world of Science. For individuals who are astounded by the origins of the universe, the intricacy of cell biology and organisation as well as the appreciation of our rapidly changing knowledge of Nanochemistry. The BTEC L3 Applied Science National Extended Certificate follows the Edexcel specification. The syllabus is wide ranging and challenging covering the key concepts in a range of Science topics which are assessed by a range of internally assessed assignments and some externally assessed units. The subject is grounded in practical activity to develop and apply the concepts learnt through a variety of topics. Students master a wide range of techniques including dissection skills and management of structured investigations. There is a strong element of on-going practical assessment which can support the theory taught in lessons. The BTEC L3 Applied Science leads on from Level 2 Science where students may have previously studied a BTEC L2 Applied Science or completed GCSEs in Core and Additional Science. It has to be acknowledged that Science is of the most challenging subjects. Science based candidates do well, but arts-based candidates opting to attempt this subject unsupported by any other scientific discipline must be aware that their task will be more difficult. Applied Science is strongly recommended for students considering careers in engineering, biochemistry, medical, veterinary or other Science associated careers. Applied Science is also useful for careers further afield due to its practical nature and the key skills that students will acquire will no doubt be critical to future success.
