YEAR 12 PHYSICS Unit 1 In this unit the particle and wave models are brought together. The concept of anti-particles is introduced, as well as quark structure. Also included is current electricity, alternating currents and use of the oscilloscope. Unit 2 This unit contains mechanics and mathematical work. It includes Newton's laws of motion. Work is done on the bulk properties of solids. Waves are investigated further including interference and diffraction effects. Unit 3 This unit is an assessment of investigative and practical skills (ISA). The practicals are based on work covered in units 1 and 2 and are followed by a written exam paper. YEAR 13 PHYSICS Unit 4 This unit contains more work on fields and further mechanics. Momentum, circular motion and simple harmonic motion are covered. Gravitational fields, electric fields, capacitors and magnetism are also taught. Unit 5 This unit contains work on nuclear and thermal physics including radioactive decay, nuclear fission, gas laws and molecular kinetic energy. The second part of the unit is the applied physics option with rotational kinetic energy and thermodynamics of engines. Unit 6 This unit is an assessment of investigative and practical skills (ISA). The practicals are based on work covered from any aspect of AS and A2 and are followed by a written exam paper.
