The course covers a range of practical skills combined with classroom sessions to develop your knowledge in areas such as ecology, conservation principles and practice, estate and land management, countryside access and sustainability. All students will spend time at a work placement that will be arranged during the first year. The college has good relationships with a selection of employers and voluntary organisations within the sector but students are encouraged to take responsibility for organising their own work experience with support from the tutor. The course includes many off-site activities and trips, for example: working trips to local woods and other conservation sites, trips to exhibitions such as the London Sustainability Show, a study tour to mid-Wales taking in the Centre for Alternative Technology. Mandatory units of the course include; undertaking an investigative project in the land-based sector and undertaking estate skills. Understanding the principles of wildlife populations, ecology and conservation and undertaking and reviewing work experience in the land-based industries. Optional units may include subjects such as; ecology, Game Bird production, vertebrate pest and predator control, tree felling, habitat management, business management and/or rreenwood crafts.
