This course will set the groundwork for a high-responsibility role in building, civil engineering or building services engineering. Taught by industry experts using the very latest technology and equipment, the course will provide you with an in-depth understanding of the built environment, building design, site preparation and lots more. We run a series of taster session during the year for you to come and have a go at Construction to see if this is the right choice for you. You will develop your skills through a variety of practical and theory lessons based on real industry situations. You will study a range of subjects linked to the above careers including: - Construction technology and design - covers the planning process, design process and methods of construction for houses and commercial buildings - Science and materials in construction - understanding heat, light and sound in connection to building requirements, structural members and loading, construction materials, their specifications and properties - Graphic detailing - the equipment and media used; the production of plans and elevations using both manual and CAD (Computer Aided Design) systems - Surveying in construction - uses of surveying equipment to carry out field surveys and produce plans - Building surveying - carries out a building condition survey and prepares schedules for repairs and maintenance - Building regulation and control - prepares drawings for planning applications and reviews the roles of the inspection of building control It is expected that you would undertake some work experience as part of the course, this is usually in the form of voluntary projects co-ordinated by the tutors. Future Opportunities Once you have completed this course, you will be able to go onto study the Level 4 Built Environment course at the college or progress onto university. You can also progress onto a Level 3 Apprenticeship.
