English Language & Literature A Level

Who is the course for? The course builds on three skills introduced at AS level. Firstly, students will us language and literary theory to analyse and compare texts. Secondly, they will develop their writing skills by adapting pieces by other writers and commenting on their adaptations and the original work. And students will also do independent study, and complete a comparative analysis of two books. What can it lead to? A2 English Language and Literature will allow you to progress to a wide range of English courses at university. It will also show that you have read widely and developed your writing skills. What will I study? For Unit 3 - Comparative Analysis and Text Adaptation, you will study a wide range of texts to develop your analytical skills, and you will also study a text prescribed by the exam board (for 2014-2015 this will be Cupcakes and Kalashnikovs: 100 years of the Best Journalism by Women: edited by Eleanor Mills). For Unit 4 - Comparative Analysis through Independent Study, you will study two texts and write a literary and linguistic comparative essay totalling between 2000 and 2500 words.

Course information

Name: English Language & Literature A Level Qualification title: GCE A Level in English Language and Literature B Qualification type: Assessment Unit 3 - Comparative Analysis and Text Adaptation, is assessed in a 2 ½ hour exam at the end of the year. There will be a question asking you to analyse and compare three unseen extracts. There will also be a question asking you to adapt a text and to write a commentary on your adaptation. This unit comprises 30% of the A level marks. Unit 4 - Comparative Analysis through Independent Study, is assessed by a 2000-2500 word essay comparing two books, which you write independently.
