Supported Studies Animal Care

UPDATED 20160212 15:51:20

The Animal Care programme is designed for young people aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties, working at entry level two/three. The aim of the programme is to increase independent living, functional skills, vocational skills in the area of animal care, and employability skills in order to access supported or open employment in the future. This programme is timetabled across three days. You will start college at 9am and finish at 2.30pm, 4.15pm or 4.30pm. You have a morning and a lunch break each day and you will be studying with around 10 other students with one tutor and at least one learning support assistant. The curriculum is based upon project-based learning, which means you will get actively involved in each session and have the opportunity to work in teams and individually. You won’t just be sitting in a classroom you will be out and about in the community, collaborating with other groups from Supported Studies and other curriculum areas from across the college. You will access external provision including Church Farm and Lucky Charms Stables every week. You will learn through a variety of physical activity, participation, work experience and academic study. The Animal Care programme includes a range of vocationally related accredited units, which are subject to change each year, to suit the needs and aspirations of the group. All our Supported Studies students are offered the chance to join our annual Summer Camp in June. You would usually spend one night and two days at Camp taking part in a range of team building and enrichment activities. Relevant placements are sourced that meet students’ interests and offer an appropriate level of support according to individual needs. You will be accompanied to interviews, receive job coaching and travel training, if needed. Students also participate in enterprise projects where they work in teams to develop products and services.
