Government and Politics - Global Politics AS Level

UPDATED 20160211 10:48:38

Politics is about the way societies handle the competition for power, decide who may use that power and how it can be curbed to avoid abuse. Politics means different things to different people, it can be a substitute for religion, it can solve problems, offer alternatives, stimulate anger and frustration or allow for people to live a better life. In the words of the noted political commentator Peter Hennessy, To understand politics you need to immerse yourself in a rich mixture of experiences - obvious and open ones such as the way business is conducted in Parliament and more subtle and secret ones like the way matters are decided in Cabinet or committee rooms of Whitehall. You need to know, too, how pressure groups try and influence the decision taking of government through a mixture of overt and concealed tactics. You must acquire a feel as well for how effectively the media keeps the public informed of what goes on behind closed doors, the doings of the mighty who possess power and those who want it but have yet to win it.
