ESOL Level 1, Level 2

UPDATED 20160205 15:06:42

Is this the right course for me? This course is for adults, whose first language is not English, to improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You will work on pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary development, grammatical accuracy, reading and understanding a range of texts, and writing formally and informally. Learners joining these courses often need to gain confidence in their skills, to gain qualifications so they can attend other courses, or to gain promotion at work. How will I learn? Classroom activities will include individual, pair and small-group work using role-play activities, online learning resources, interactive tasks on the computer and teacher-led activities. You will need to do at least an hour's independent study each week. Will I gain a qualification? You will prepare for ESOL exams at Level 1 (B2) or Level 2 (C1). These are nationally recognised qualifications. There are separate exams for speaking and listening, reading and writing. You can take an exam each term. It usually takes a learner 36 weeks/3 terms to pass all three exams. How can I prepare for the course? Read something challenging in English every day. Listen to the radio and podcasts online. Speak English as much as you can. Use your phone to record yourself speaking English. Once you start the class, use the resources in the course handbook to help you learn English. Use an English dictionary. What can I do next? When you have completed Level 1, you can progress to Level 2. When you have completed Level 2, you can progress to IELTS, Access to Further Education courses, or perhaps GCSE, depending on your skills and needs.
