Kiln Glass - an Introduction

UPDATED 20160205 15:06:40

Is this the right course for me? The course is designed for those with an interest in kiln (warm) glass and/or beginners looking for a new creative hobby that is both rewarding and therapeutic. No previous knowledge or experience needed to join this class. However, you must be prepared to experiment as the results of kiln firing of materials can be unpredictable. What will I learn? To work safely and effectively To cut and grind glass safely To gain knowledge of what 'fusing compatibility glass' means and its importance in producing successful glasswork To design, plan, prepare and make several small decorative items for kiln firing To gain knowledge of how to prepare a kiln for firing. How will I learn? There will be demonstrations of the techniques, tooling, materials and equipment used in the design and making of fused (warm) glass items. You will develop the relevant techniques through practical exercises and the construction of several small decorative items for kiln firing. Will I gain a qualification? There is no formal qualification, but you may request a certificate of attendance from your tutor. What can I do next? There are integrated stained (cool) glass and fused (warm) glass courses available at the Community Learning MK in the design and making of 2D and 3D creative glasswork items. Some of these courses can lead to the certificate of a formal City and Guilds qualification at levels 1, 2 and an award at level 3. Your tutor will be able to give you specific information about any of these courses
