UPDATED 20161017 08:45:22

Who is speaking? Why? How do they seek to control, manipulate or entertain through language? Why have texts been produced? How? During your study you will develop the key analytical skills to successfully analyse and evaluate all types of English, across both spoken and written modes. You will also use your knowledge to produce your own creative texts. Expect to be challenged, to get to grips with grammar and to develop an insider’s knowledge of a constantly-developing subject. You will also be re-introduced to spoken language, building upon the skills you acquired at GCSE. Subjects studied include the language of: creative writing; media (spoken and printed); the Internet; multi-modal texts; advertisements; politics; child language acquisition; accent and dialect; functional writing; texts over time (from 1500s to the present day); letters; gender differences; pidgins and creoles; theatre; occupations; the legal system; ethnic differences; world Englishes (such as American English)…and many more!
