Religious Studies combines two areas, Philosophy and Ethics. In Philosophy you will consider some of the ultimate questions, such as the existence of God, life after death and the nature of the debate between science and religion. You will be taught to construct arguments concerning these areas and consider the evidence put forward by scholars. Ethics involves initially studying a number of approaches to ethical decision-making such as utilitarianism, Kantian ethics and Christian approaches. You will critically assess each of these approaches. Following this, we consider a number of modern ethical dilemmas concerning areas such as Abortion, Euthanasia, Genetic Engineering, Sexual Ethics, IVF, Business Ethics and War. You look at a number of viewpoints and consider the adequacy of each ethical approach for solving these dilemmas. You will develop a wide range of skills, including how to recall, select and deploy specified knowledge; identify, investigate and analyse questions and issues; use appropriate language and terminology in context; the ideas, the relevance of arguments and the views of scholars; communicate, using reasoned arguments substantiated by evidence; make connections between the areas of study and other aspects of human experience.
