The course builds upon the knowledge and understanding of GCSE Science. It is expected that students will have achieved a GCSE grade B or above. During the course students will need to be able to communicate effectively and research information from a variety of sources. During parts of the course students will also be expected to handle and interpret data. As a result students are also expected have grade C or above in English and Maths. The AS course consists of 2 papers worth 50% each: Paper 1 lasts for 1 hour 30 minutes and is worth 80 marks, a minimum of 20% of the marks will be awarded for mathematical skills. Some questions will assess the theoretical understanding of experimental methods. It examines atomic structure, bonding, redox, inorganic chemistry and moles. Paper 2 follows the same format as paper 1 but concentrates on Organic and Physical chemistry; bonding moles, organic chemistry, analytical techniques, energetics, kinetics and equilibrium.
