The course builds upon the knowledge and understanding of GCSE double award Science. It is expected that students will have achieved a GCSE grade B or above. During the course students will need to be able to communicate effectively and research information from a variety of sources. During parts of the course students will also be expected to handle and interpret data. As a result students are also expected have grade C or above in English and Maths. There are no controlled assessments or coursework, practical work will be assessed in written papers. A separate ‘endorsement’ of practical work will be assessed by teachers, however this will not be graded. If students pass it will be reported on their certificate. Students will do at least 12 practical activities across the two-year course and will have more opportunities to learn and use practical skills to link theory with practice, deepening their knowledge and understanding. Students will apply the knowledge and understanding they learn from these practicals in written exams. Practical based questions will form about 15% of the total assessment.
