To succeed at A level English Literature, you must be an enthusiastic, independent reader who is confident expressing their own interpretations of texts and who relishes debate and discussion. There will be a substantial amount of reading, much of which must be undertaken at home or in private study. You will need at least C grades at GCSE English Language and English Literature. Students have often found the course very difficult to access if they have not achieved a grade B at GCSE. This is not a course suitable for those who have not studied English Literature at GCSE. You will read, discuss and study a range of literary texts including at least 1 play by Shakespeare, a more modern drama text and a range of prose and poetry texts, written pre and post 1900. Texts include ‘Othello’ by Shakespeare, ‘Death of a Salesman’ by Arthur Miller and a range of poetry. At A2 there is a 2½ hour exam on Literary Genres (either tragedy or comedy) and a 3 hour exam on either Elements of Crime Writing or Elements of Political Writing. These are both worth 40% of the A level qualification; the other 20% is a non-exam assessment consisting of two 1200-1500 word coursework essays.
