This is a physically demanding and challenging course and requires the development of technique and fitness to achieve good grades. There is a combination of Applied Dance theory, tested in a written exam, practical assessment through a visiting moderator. You will be allocated studio time in your timetable for rehearsal and to choreograph. Due to the written demands of the course, there is a strong emphasis on preparing for the written paper and you will be taught how to structure written essays appropriately. You will develop skills in three areas: performance, choreography and dance appreciation (theory). You will be taught how to choreograph for both solo and group composition effectively using sensory stimuli as a starting point. Technical and performance skills are particularly important for you to refine the quality of your choreography and to broaden your movement vocabulary. To promote versatility, we train the dancers in contemporary, modern, ballet and jazz techniques where lessons are underpinned by specialist dance vocabulary. Horton, Graham, Humphrey-Limon and Cunningham technique are particularly focused upon as they have contributed significantly to the development of modern dance and are specifically taught in higher education establishments. The study of health, anatomy and physiology are taught practically over the duration of one year to help improve stamina, flexibility and strength.
