Course aims: The course provides students with the opportunity to explore a range of biological concepts, both theoretically and experimentally. Throughout the course, students will be able to develop a wide range of skills including experimental techniques, analytical and evaluative skills and independent research skills. Outline of the course content: Development of practical skills in biology: planning, implementing, analysis and evaluation. This element will be examined in the written papers. Foundations in biology: cell structure, biological molecules, nucleotides and nucleic acids, enzymes, biological membranes, cell division, cell diversity and cellular organisation. Exchange and transport: exchange surfaces, transport in animals and transport in plants. Biodiversity, evolution and disease: communicable disease, disease prevention and the immune system, biodiversity, classification and evolution. Communications, homeostasis and energy: communication and homeostasis, excretion as an example of homeostatic control, neuronal communication, hormonal communication, plant and animal responses, photosynthesis and respiration. Genetics, evolution and ecosystems: cellular control, patterns of inheritance, manipulating genomes, cloning and biotechnology, ecosystems, populations and sustainability. What key skills will I learn? The course content allows students to develop skills in communicating scientific ideas using appropriate language, application of theory, collecting primary scientific data, presenting and processing both primary and secondary data, data analysis and evaluation of experimental technique. There is a greater emphasis on mathematical skills in biology including statistical analysis of data. Careers: Biology A Level is a route into Medicine, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Veterinary Science, Veterinary Nursing, Optometry, Dentistry, Conservation, Marine Biology, Horticulture, Medicinal Research, Pathology, Forensic Science.
