This course is designed to encourage students to read widely and independently, to explore literary texts for their own intrinsic value and to set them within their appropriate literary, cultural and historical contexts. A willingness to read widely and to share an informed and personal response is most necessary. COURSE STRUCTURE The course consists of diverse units in: drama and poetry, including the study of at least one play by Shakespeare; comparative study of literature with regard to shared contexts and themes; and coursework based on students’ independent reading, as negotiated with teaching staff.
