The AS level is made up of two units: Unit one centres on Education. Students will study topics such as the role and functions of the education system, including its relationship to the economy and to class structure, differential educational achievement of social groups by social class, gender and ethnicity in contemporary society. Students will also study sociological research methods comprising; quantitative and qualitative methods, design, sources of data, including questionnaires, interviews, observation and experiments. Unit two covers Families and Households were students will study the issues relating to changes in family and household structure and the impact this has had on society. The A Level course comprises three units. The content of the first two units are identical to that of the two AS papers outlined above. Unit three covers Crime and Deviance. In this unit, students will consider different explanations of crime and deviance and how various forms of behaviour become labelled as deviant, and how society controls its members. Students will also study the social distribution of crime by ethnicity, gender and social class. Within this unit, students will also extend their knowledge of research methodology.

Name: Sociology Qualification title: GCE A Level in Sociology Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment Assessment is via written examination only. AS level Sociology comprises two equally weighted examinations at the end of the course. Time allowed for each paper is one hour 30 minutes. Each paper is worth 50% of the total AS award. The A Level qualification is linear. Linear means that you sit all your A Level examinations at the end of the two year course. A Level Sociology comprises three 2-hour examinations.
