This course is designed to deepen students’ existing understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of the medium of Film – the major art form of the 20th Century and the new millennium. Students will study this medium in depth in many ways, including: • Through film genres and categories, such as film noir, melodrama, comedy, literary adaptations, horror, gangster, etc. • As an art form, looking at creative and aesthetic elements – such as set and costume/make-up/hair design; camera and editing techniques; sound design; musical soundtrack composition. • As a social and economic institution – examining the structure of the film industry in Hollywood, the UK and other countries, eg Spain, France, Japan, Hong Kong and Latin America; film finance; advertising and marketing; production processes. • Performance and direction – styles of acting; the function of the Hollywood star system and the role of the director. • What films tell us about when and where they were made; how we see ourselves and others – issues of representation of gender, race and nationality; the social, political and cultural significance of films, past and present. • The role of cinema in a digital age and how audiences access films and respond to them (fans and reviews).
