Mathematics

UPDATED 20161019 12:14:11

Study of any Mathematics qualification will develop your understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment. You will extend your range of mathematical skills and techniques, and use them in increasingly more demanding situations. You will learn to use mathematics as an effective means of communication, and develop an awareness of the relevance of mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and society in general. Two-thirds of your course will be Core Mathematics, which includes coordinate geometry, calculus (differentiation and integration), trigonometry, arithmetic and geometric series, binomial expansions, logarithms, exponential functions and vectors. The remaining third of the course will be either Mechanics or Statistics – you will need to choose which: Mechanics includes kinematics (velocity, acceleration, displacement etc), forces, Newton’s laws, collisions, moments and energy. Statistics includes representing and summarising data, probability, the normal, binomial and Poisson distributions and hypothesis testing. For all the units you will be introduced to the ideas, tackle situations that arise, and be given plenty of opportunity to develop your skills with all the techniques introduced. Ability to use algebra is fundamental to all aspects of mathematics and you will develop your algebraic skills throughout.
