UPDATED 20161114 15:48:23

Ever since humankind started to think, religion has been a fundamental part of our development. As people look into the vastness of space or witness the miracle of birth, they contemplate the meaning of life and their own mortality. In the 21st century, religion still addresses the same eternal human questions about life and death, values and relationships, right and wrong. Religious Studies is an inclusive subject, designed for people of any faith… and people who have no faith. It is not necessary to have taken Religious Studies at GCSE, although students who have a GCSE will find that the A Level builds on their knowledge, understanding and skills. As well as having a desire to find out more about religion and its role in society, it is also useful if you have good literacy skills. If you are interested in current affairs, people, different cultures and the debates about the meaning of life, then this could be the course for you. A level Religious Studies requires the in-depth study of one of the six major world religions, the beliefs and teachings of which are then applied to various philosophical concepts and ethical issues. Key areas of study include; Life after death, Arguments for the existence of God, The challenge from science, Religious identity, Free will and moral responsibility. Students will be challenged to consider how religion is influenced by, and influences a range of ethical issues We have very high expectations of students, you will be required to carry out independent study to consolidate your learning as well as complete homework on a weekly basis. You need to be motivated, enthusiastic and develop an enquiring, critical and reflective approach to the study of religion and philosophy.
